My biggest takeaways from this course were learning about programs I have never heard of or used before, learning how to use video and editing skills as an educational tool, and connecting with others/sharing ideas about the use of technology in the classroom.
Because of this class I have been introduced to so many websites that I will use in the classroom including Kahoot!, Edmodo, and Toondoo.com. I improved at using some websites that I was somewhat familiar with like Quizlet and Prezi (I have made SO many prezi presentations since beginning this class). I also made one this evening to share a class presentation with my classmates in another class (they were really impressed by prezi and had never heard of it before :). I enjoyed learning how to use new programs to create visuals for my classroom. I have never used toondoo.com before and throught it was a lot of fun. I’d also like to incorporate it into a lesson somehow eventually.
I have been wanting to make a video lesson for a while now, and this class motivated me to finally make one. Since making one, I have made a second one (a part two to the first one) and plan on continuing making them for my classroom. I’d also like to continue making screencasts for my presentations.
I enjoyed reading blog entries and seeing assignments by fellow classmates. I have taken away ideas from them and learned about tools for the classroom I would have not heard of otherwise. I enjoyed watching their videos and reading about how they might or have used these tools and websites with their workmates and/or students.
One of the assignments was to research conferences that we might attend. I am so glad this was a part of one of our assignments. I found out about a conference that is happening online in February that I plan on attending. I don’t know if I would have found out about it if it were not for this course.
My favorite assignment was definitely the video assignment. I used to make short films for fun, but haven’t in awhile. So, it was nice to get back into filming and editing. Over the past few years, I have been watching art demonstrations by artists and art teachers on youtube and I have been wanting to try it out for my classroom. This lesson really motivated me to get started. I ended up using the screencast and the video lesson with my students and they LOVED it. It also made my lesson run much more smoothly. I did not have to spend extra time setting up my demonstration table. I also had more time to set up the supplies while the students were watching the video. I ended up showing it to my 3rd graders and they thought it was THE COOLEST THING EVER. I think they were a little more engaged than they would be watching me do a regular demonstration. I enjoyed using the screencast as a part of my lesson. I repeat presentations a lot in my classroom because sometimes I teach the same lesson to more than one grade. So, I think making screencasts for presentations will help me out tremendously. I won’t have to repeat myself and since everything is pre-recorded, I can make sure to includes everything I want to say. I also think showing a video cuts back on behavior problems like blurting out.
I definitely plan on creating more lesson videos and screencasts for my classroom from now on. It engages the kids and it makes my lessons run much more smoothly. I also want to incorporate Kahoot! and Quizlet in the classroom more often. That is another tool that really engaged the kids and made my lessons tie together better. With these tools, I was able to assess my students, incorporate technology, and the kids enjoyed competing with their classmates in a fun game.
