Last Blog Post for EDM510

My biggest takeaways from this course were learning about programs I have never heard of or used before, learning how to use video and editing skills as an educational tool, and connecting with others/sharing ideas about the use of technology in the classroom.
Because of this class I have been introduced to so many websites that I will use in the classroom including Kahoot!, Edmodo, and Toondoo.com. I improved at using some websites that I was somewhat familiar with like Quizlet and Prezi (I have made SO many prezi presentations since beginning this class). I also made one this evening to share a class presentation with my classmates in another class (they were really impressed by prezi and had never heard of it before :). I enjoyed learning how to use new programs to create visuals for my classroom. I have never used toondoo.com before and throught it was a lot of fun. I’d also like to incorporate it into a lesson somehow eventually.
I have been wanting to make a video lesson for a while now, and this class motivated me to finally make one. Since making one, I have made a second one (a part two to the first one) and plan on continuing making them for my classroom. I’d also like to continue making screencasts for my presentations.
I enjoyed reading blog entries and seeing assignments by fellow classmates. I have taken away ideas from them and learned about tools for the classroom I would have not heard of otherwise. I enjoyed watching their videos and reading about how they might or have used these tools and websites with their workmates and/or students.
One of the assignments was to research conferences that we might attend. I am so glad this was a part of one of our assignments. I found out about a conference that is happening online in February that I plan on attending. I don’t know if I would have found out about it if it were not for this course.

My favorite assignment was definitely the video assignment. I used to make short films for fun, but haven’t in awhile. So, it was nice to get back into filming and editing. Over the past few years, I have been watching art demonstrations by artists and art teachers on youtube and I have been wanting to try it out for my classroom. This lesson really motivated me to get started. I ended up using the screencast and the video lesson with my students and they LOVED it. It also made my lesson run much more smoothly. I did not have to spend extra time setting up my demonstration table. I also had more time to set up the supplies while the students were watching the video. I ended up showing it to my 3rd graders and they thought it was THE COOLEST THING EVER. I think they were a little more engaged than they would be watching me do a regular demonstration. I enjoyed using the screencast as a part of my lesson. I repeat presentations a lot in my classroom because sometimes I teach the same lesson to more than one grade. So, I think making screencasts for presentations will help me out tremendously. I won’t have to repeat myself and since everything is pre-recorded, I can make sure to includes everything I want to say. I also think showing a video cuts back on behavior problems like blurting out.

I definitely plan on creating more lesson videos and screencasts for my classroom from now on. It engages the kids and it makes my lessons run much more smoothly. I also want to incorporate Kahoot! and Quizlet in the classroom more often. That is another tool that really engaged the kids and made my lessons tie together better. With these tools, I was able to assess my students, incorporate technology, and the kids enjoyed competing with their classmates in a fun game.

I found out about so many different tools and websites I have yet to use, but plan on trying out in the future. Ed.ted.com, mindomo, storybird.com, and skype in the Classroom were some tools I discovered through this course. Edmodo is another one that interests me. I would love to try it in my classroom next semester as a way to engage my students in what we are doing outside of the classroom.

Proof of Mastery

  • Library Media Masters Standards:

    • 290-3-3-.49 (3)(b)3.(i)(I) EDM 510 The Alabama Course of Study: Technology Education.
Kahoot! Assessments

Quizlet Assessment

https://quizlet.com/165195967/perspective-space-rooms-6th-grade-flash-cards/

For this assignment, we were asked to create two different assessments to use in the classroom. I created three assessments using Kahoot! and one using Quizlet. I believe this assignment meets the requirements for being proficient because I demonstrated that I understood the tools and successfully used them to test my student's knowledge of the material.

    • 290-3-3-.49 (3)(b)3.(i)(III) EDM 510 The National Technology
Education Standards of the International Society for Technology in
Education (ISTE).

Web 2.0 & 3.0 Blog Post

Visual Tool Blog Post

One of the options to demonstrate your knowledge of this standard is to share two of the best blog posts from this semester. I believe the Web 2.0 & 3.0 blog post is proficient because I displayed information about web 2.0 and 3.0 through the use of technology (Prezi) and provided insight for how I think web 3.0 will change education. The blog post on visual tools is exceptional because all of the tools created were designed using a different form of technology and they are all tools I will be able to use in my classroom.

  • Alternative Masters Standards:

    • 290-3-3-.44 (3)(c)1.(iii) Knowledge of media communication
 technologies that enrich learning opportunities.
One of the options to share for this standard was a digital story. I created a screencast for the digital story assignment, so I thought this would be appropriate to share. I created a presentation to share with students and recorded my voice over the presentation. I believe this assignment is exceptional because it is concise, covers a lot of material, and is engaging.

    • 290-3-3-.44 (3)(c)4.(ii) Knowledge of the wide range of
technologies that support and enhance instruction, including
classroom and school resources as well as distance learning and
online learning opportunities.
One of the options for this standard was to share a video. This is probably the assignment I enjoyed the most and spent the most time on and I think that it shows in my execution of the assignment. For that reason, I believe it meets the requirement for being exceptional. Creating videos for the classroom is something that I will continue doing throughout my career.

Edmodo Lesson

I chose to use the Edmodo tool. Edmodo is a lot like Facebook. The layout and features are very similar. This website allows teachers to create an online space for their students to have discussions and share ideas. The tool also allows you to easily share classroom information with parents and use Google apps through the website as well.

I like to share videos and images in my classroom throughout the project. I think Edmodo would benefit my students because it would allow them to have more class time to work on the projects if they watched the video before entering my room. I also like the idea of having the students share what they learned in class to reinforce the lesson. I think it's important that students talk about their work and critique their classmates, so Edmodo would be a great tool for that as well.

I think the most challenging thing about this assignment was deciding on a tool to use and learning how to navigate the new tool. I want to teach an Ancient Egyptian themed art lesson later on this year, so I decided to incorporate Edmodo into the lesson. I tried to come up with several ways for students to interact with the website so they will hopefully have an easier time making connections in the art room.

Landscape Lesson Screencast

I decided to make a screencast to go along with the video I made for our video assignment. For that assignment, I shot a video of a landscape painting demo to show to my 4th and 5th grade students. I'll show this screencast before the painting demo. In the screencast, I talk about the artist and show visuals through Prezi.

I used Quicktime to make the screencast. It was very easy to make. The most time consuming part was making the Prezi and recording. I had to record a few times until I got a recording I was happy with. If the kids respond well to the videos, I would definitely consider making these again for future lessons.

Visuals

Photo/Realistic

I chose this visual to share with my students, so they can see an example of how brushes are meant to be stored. Some students need a reminder when we paint this week, so I plan on showing them the image when we discuss clean-up. I'd also like to add the picture to the brush storage area, so they are reminded when putting the brushes away after cleaning.

I found the photo and edited it/added text using PicMonkey. PicMonkey was easy to use and free. I'll definitely continue to use it.

Organizational/Chart

I decided to make a simple mind mapping chart of the Elements of Art to share with my students when the elements are discussed during a lesson. I used Mindomo to create the mind map. I like the clean look of the digital mind map. I also like that links can be added. I found some short videos on Youtube about each element and added them to the mind map. I might also use this mind map as a visual for the students and ask them to re-create the mind map in a creative way, while showing that they understand the elements.

Transformational/Cartoon

I made a cartoon to share with my younger students to remind them what they are supposed to do when it's time to clean up. Lately, I've been having a few students that need a reminder and I thought something simple and silly might help them remember. I used toondoo.com/ to make my cartoon.

I really like this program and will probably use it again or introduce it to my students to use.

Creating a Video

Landscape Painting Demo

This week's assignment was the most challenging and rewarding.

I decided to make a film to demonstrate a painting project to my 4th & 5th grade students.
I'm so glad this was one of our assignments. I've been wanting to make a video to introduce or demonstrate a lesson to my students and this assignment got me motivated. I plan on showing my students a Prezi of Heather Galler's artwork and following it with this video.

This was a huge learning experience for me. I've never set up a camera to film a demonstration before. I've also never shot and edited anything educational that included steps.

One of my biggest challenges was, lighting, setting up, and recording the demonstration. My video camera no longer works, so I ended up using my iPhone and attaching my iPhone bike mount to my tripod. By the time I rigged up the tripod and shot some footage, the lighting changed, and I had to re-shoot in another place. iMovie was also challenging as well. It's been a while since I've made a film and edited on iMovie, so it took some time to get the hang of it.

I hope the kids enjoy watching the video. It will definitely be nice to just play a video for them to watch and not have to repeat the demonstration for each class.

Even though it was time consuming, I'd love to make another demonstration video. I have a few ideas on how I would do it differently. I need to figure out a better set-up and maybe shoot the video more zoomed in. I'd like to see how this lesson goes and get feedback from the kids, then make a part 2 for this lesson,

Week 6 - Web 2.0 & Web 3.0

Here is a link to my Prezi about web 2.0 and web 3.0.

I decided to use Prezi for this assignment because I already have a Prezi account and have been using it in the classroom for the last two years. I like Prezi because it is easy to use and more engaging than a basic powerpoint. I also like it because it's mobile, so I can create a presentation and view it from anywhere.
I used my textbook to find information for this assignment. I also used webopedia and wikipedia and got a better understanding of Web 3.0 by reading this article and this article
It was interesting reading about web 2.0 and 3.0. I've never heard of those terms before. It's fascinating how much the web has developed over the last few years, I remember when it starting becoming web 2.0, around the time when social media came about. From my understanding, web 3.0 is an extension of 2.0 and we don't really know what all it entails yet. The challenge I faced during this assignment was just reading about web 3.0 and trying to understand what it is and how it's different. It was also challenging getting all of my thoughts and findings into the Prezi document so that the reader could easily follow and understand. I struggled with the last question and changed my answer in the presentation several times. I hope my final answer makes sense.
This activity encouraged me to think about ways that I can use Web 2.0 in my classroom...
I have an art room Instagram account where I post photos of the kid's work to share with parents and older students. This chapter got me to ask myself questions like How can I better engage my older students and encourage them to learn more about art through our art room Instagram? Or other mobile app, forum, or blog? At the moment, I am just posting photos of the students at work and their final pieces (and using it for myself, to connect with other art teachers). I believe it does get the students a little more excited and it may encourage them to put more effort into their projects (because their work may be posted). This chapter got me thinking of different ways that I can take it step further and maybe find a space online for students to share art tutorials, post photos of art including art they make at home, and having discussions about art outside of the classroom.
